The Safaricom Huawei E173 Modem Quick Review
There is this new 7.2Mbps white Safaricom modem that has been in the market for quite a few months now. Today, I had a chance to unbox and try it on my computer to see what it can do. Previously, I have been using the Safaricom Huawei E1750 modem which is capable of 7.2Mbps just like the new E173.
From an outer appearance, the newer model has softer rounder edges that make it appear a little smaller than the E1750 but with no noticeable variation in weight. It has a memory card slot as well and a firm SIM compartment (The first generation of Safaricom modems had a wobbly SIM slot that was a bother to many, not anymore).
In summary, these are the technical specifications of the E173 as printed on its package:
- EDGE/GPRS/GSM/850/900/1800/1900 Mhz
- Micro SD Card Slot
- Data and SMS service
- Plug and Play.
I tested the Huawei E173 using the weekly Safaricom unlimited Internet, I had earlier made a Post on my experience with the Safaricom weekly unlimited Internet using the Hauwei E1750 modem, the speeds were rather disappointing and videos on Youtube lagged alot. Downloads as well hit 90Kbps and couldn’t go higher.
My experience with the new Huawei E173 on the other hand was different, though still clocked at 7.2Mbps as the Huawei E1750, the E173 was capable of streaming Youtube videos effortlessly and I could watch live TV without any lags. For the first time in my unlimited Internet subscriptions, downloads clocked an impressive 120Kbps.
The new Safaricom Huawei E173 modem will cost you Ksh. 2,000 and a free simcard from any Safaricom store near you. To my surprise, the older model, the Huawei E1750 also goes for the same price. It’s wiser to go with the better performing model this Christmas holidays.
